Cinder är en sexton år gammal cyborg som bor i New Beijing, den futuristiska staden i östra samväldet, med sina styvsystrar och sin hemska styvmor. En mycket skicklig mekaniker, Cinder har en monter på marknaden och får besök av prins Kai, som ber henne att fixa hans android. Ett utbrott av den dödliga sjukdomen letumosis sprider sig snabbt på marknaden och allt börjar nysta upp. Cinders värld håller på att förändras när hon försöker rädda sin styvsysters liv och i slutändan hela planeten.

- Levana plans to kill you once you are married!
- Although she knows that her life is at risk, Cinder feels the need and responsibility to protect her country and its people. One example of this is when she goes to the ball, knowing that Queen Levana is there and wants her dead, in order to prevent Kai from agreeing to marry the Queen.

- ACCEPTANCE and CONNECTION
- You are not going to the ball. You don't belong there.
- Cinder lives with her horrible stepmother and her two stepsisters. Peony, the youngest, shows caring and kindness towards Cinder, but she dies from letumosis. Because Cinder is a cyborg, people dislike her and are afraid of her, even though they may not know her. Cinder longs for a connection with someone.
