Create a Product Roadmap*

What is a Product Road Map?

A product road map is a visual representation of the planned development of a product over a specific period of time. It outlines the features, functionality, and improvements that will be added to the product, as well as the timeline for these changes.

Importance of Product Road Map

A product road map is important because it provides a clear and concise plan for the development of a product. It helps teams to prioritize features and improvements based on customer needs and market trends, and ensures that everyone is aligned on the product vision and goals. A product road map can also be used to communicate the product strategy to stakeholders and customers.

What's Included in a Product Road Map?

A product road map typically includes the following elements:

  • Product vision and goals
  • Key features and functionality
  • Timeline for development
  • Milestones and deliverables
  • Budget and resource allocation
  • Market analysis and customer research

How are Product Road Maps Used?

Product road maps are used by product managers, development teams, and stakeholders to plan, prioritize, and communicate the development of a product. They help teams to stay focused on the product vision and goals, prioritize features and improvements based on customer needs and market trends, and ensure that development is aligned with the overall business strategy. Product road maps can also be used to communicate the product strategy to stakeholders and customers, and to gather feedback and insights for future iterations.

5 steps for Creating a Product Roadmap

1

Set Goals

The first step in creating a product road map is to set your goals. What are you trying to achieve? What problem(s) do you want to solve?

2

Divide Into Epics

The next step is to divide your workload pipeline into epics, or overall categories. This will allow you to break down your large number of tasks into 3 or 4 key objectives.

3

Divide Epics Into Actionable Items

After that, start adding actionable items into each of your epics. What can you get started working on now? And once that’s done – what’s next?

4

Set Your Timeline

Now it’s time to create a reasonable timeline. Go through all of your tasks and make an educated guess on how long it will take to complete each one. Make sure this timeline fits within your overall calendar. This is a good way to see if you have extra time for more possible features, or are over your time budget and have to cut back.

5

Iterate Accordingly

Now that you have your roadmap, it’s time to get started. Start working and iterate your map accordingly. Maybe the first item takes much longer than expected, in which case refer back to the map so you can figure out the best course of action.
