- Lolly and Vega live in Harlem, a neighborhood in Upper Manhattan.They live in St. Nicholas Houses or "Saint Nick," which is a public housing project consisting of a large complex ofapartment buildings and a park. Lolly describes it as a dangerous and run down place but also filled with friends and families.

- Lolly lives with his mother in an apartment. She and Lolly's father divorced and he doesn't see his dad that much. His mother has been dating Yvonne for a few years and she is a stable presence in Lolly's life. Lolly's big brother Jermaine used to share a room with him but he was murdered in October, leaving the family devastated.

- Lolly spends a lot of time in an after-school program for St. Nick's residents. The director, Mr. Ali, allows him to build his elaborate Legos cities in a large empty storage room. Lolly has mixed feelings when Big Rose joins him.
