In this activity, students will create a timeline of 5-10 events in Canadian history.
For an alternative to the timeline layout, have students create a timeline poster to incorporate into a presentation or gallery walk. You can add more than one template to this assignment to give students lots of options and adjust the instructions accordingly.

Encourage students to share and discuss their timelines with classmates for constructive feedback. Peer review helps students deepen understanding and improve their work through collaboration and reflection.
Divide students into groups of 3–4 and have each student present their timeline. Smaller groups ensure everyone has a chance to participate and minimizes distractions.
Instruct students to offer two positive comments (stars) and one suggestion (wish) about a peer’s timeline. This keeps feedback balanced and constructive.
Demonstrate how to give specific, respectful feedback using a sample timeline. Showing examples helps set clear expectations and builds student confidence.
After the session, give students time to update their timelines based on peer suggestions. Revising helps students apply feedback and improve their work quality.
A timeline activity for early Canadian history is a project where students select and organize key historical events in chronological order. They include accurate dates, short descriptions, and illustrations to visually represent important milestones in Canada's past up to 1783.
Students can create a Canadian history timeline by choosing 5-10 significant events, entering their dates on a timeline template, adding brief descriptions, and illustrating each event. This can be done individually or as a poster for presentations or gallery walks.
Some important events to include in a grades 6-8 Canadian history timeline might be the arrival of the First Peoples, the founding of Quebec, the fur trade era, British and French colonial conflicts, and the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
Creating a timeline helps students understand the sequence of historical events, see cause-and-effect relationships, and visually organize facts, making it easier to remember and discuss key moments in Canadian history.
Creative alternatives include making timeline posters, interactive digital timelines, or gallery walk displays where students present their timelines visually with scenes, characters, and items to engage classmates.
