Zeus je bio najmlađi sin Cronosa i Rhee. Cronos je bio najmlađi od Titana, i bio je paranoičan da bi ih njihova djeca srušila pa ih je jeli. Rhea je bila toliko uznemirena da će svoje sljedeće bebe, Zeusa, pojesti kad je rođen, prerušio stijenu kao bebu i sakrio Zeusa s obitelji pastir dok nije odrastao. Cronos je pojela stijenu.

Zeus je također oslobodio i stričeve svojih očeva: Hecatonchires (tri divova) i Cyclopes (trojica jednodijelnih muškaraca) odakle ih je Cronos zarobio u Tartaru. Zajedno, djeca i njihovi stričevi vodili su rat protiv svog oca i drugih Titana, na kraju ih srušivši i zatočili ih u Tartar. Zeus je oženio Heru i nakon bacanja kocke sa svojim dvojicom braćom Posejdonom i Hadom i osvajanjem neba, postao je kralj bogova, neba, grmljavine i pravde.
Zeus i Hera zajedno su imali troje djece: Ares, Eris, i Hephaestus; Zeus, međutim, nije bio vjeran Heri. Također je rodio djecu s još nekoliko žena. Najpoznatiji od ove djece su: Apollo, Artemis, Atena, Dioniz, Persefon, Perseus, Helena Troja, Hermes, Heracles, Minos i Muze.
